269 - The Alchemy of Herbs

The Alchemy of Herbs: A Beginner's Guide: Healing Herbs to Know, Grow, and Use by Adidas Wilson (Author, Publisher)

Select herbs can grow extraordinary well indoors or outdoors, in containers or the ground, it all boils down to what you want to do. If the space receives less than five hours of sunlight in a day, you might be better off going indoors for easier accessibility especially for watering and cooking.

Besides, this helps prevent weeds, pests or fluctuating temperatures.

Seeds are quite cheap, but take longer and require more resources to grow. While on the other hand, seedlings are faster to grow, but only available in spring and summer.

Several gardening tools are essential, may be a spade, gloves, pots, containers, virtually anything you need for the job. And remember, some fertilized soil is important too, this can be naturally generated, or a general-purpose compost solution from a gardening store. For container gardening, a packaged potting soil mix can go a long way, as you will have little, to no worry about pests.

332 - The Peregrine: 50th Anniversary Edition

The Peregrine: 50th Anniversary Edition: Afterword by Mark Cocker (introduction), Robert Macfarlane (afterword), John Fanshawe (editor) J. A. Baker (author) (Author)

Reissue of J. A. Baker's extraordinary classic of British nature writing, with an exclusive new afterword by Robert Macfarlane.

J. A. Baker's extraordinary classic of British nature writing was first published in 1967. Greeted with acclaim, it went on to win the Duff Cooper Prize, the pre-eminent literary prize of the time.

Luminaries such as Ted Hughes, Barry Lopez and Andrew Motion have cited it as one of the most important books in twentieth-century nature writing. Despite the association of peregrines with the wild, outer reaches of the British Isles, The Peregrine is set on the flat marshes of the Essex coast, where J. A. Baker spent long winters looking and writing about the visitors from the uplands - peregrines that spend the winter hunting the huge flocks of pigeons and waders that share the desolate landscape with them.

This new edition of the timeless classic, published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first publication, features an afterword by one of the book's greatest admirers, Robert Macfarlane.

336 - Plant Souls Speak

Plant Souls Speak: The Transformative Energies of Live Plants (Explorer Race Series, Book 16) by Robert Shapiro (Author)

What we intend to speak about in this book - if I may speak in general for all plants - is how you as the human species can interact with plants in a more benevolent way.
For a long time, you have been clear about the medicinal uses of leaves and stems and seeds and flower petals and so on, but you are only getting about one-tenth of the energy available to you in this way.

It is always better to interact with the plant and its energies in its live form, but you need to know how.

The intention of this book is to reveal that formula so that you can stop searching for magical cures to diseases by exhausting the supply of life forms around you: A much simpler process is available. This book will not just comment on things you know about but show you what you are missing in your interaction with plants.

* The Book of Stones, Revised Edition

The Book of Stones, Revised Edition: Who They Are and What They Teach by Robert Simmons (Author), Naisha Ahsian (Author), Hazel Ravel (Contributor)

Often dubbed the "crystals bible," this comprehensive reference guide to the spiritual and healing qualities of 455 sacred stones has become the go-to book for looking up the properties of gems and minerals.

Each entry includes vivid color photographs for each stone to aid identification and to showcase its beauty, as well as listing its scientific information, its element and chakra correspondences, and the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of each stone.

Illustrated by gorgeously lit, clear color photos to aid quick identification, the book offers an illuminating alphabetical journey through the mineral kingdom, stone by stone. This new edition of The Book of Stones, the best-selling guide to some of Earth's most beautiful natural objects, is revised to include 76 new entries.

The book begins with two introductory chapters detailing advice by authors Naisha Ahsian and Robert Simmons on how to work with crystals and stones-including the concept of crystal resonance and the scientific observation that living organisms (such as ourselves) are liquid crystalline structures.

Each entry begins with the stone name and photo, plus its elemental and chakra correspondences, as well as keywords that indicate its properties.

Next comes a description of the crystal structure, hardness, history, and known locations of each mineral, plus any relevant legend or lore from the past. Each author then offers their own take and personal insights on the subtle energy properties and spiritual applications of the stone.

The entries conclude with summaries of the spiritual, emotional, and physical healing qualities of the stone, and an affirmation for evoking its potential benefits. The book's presentation is straightforward enough to make it an excellent introduction for beginners, yet the level of detail and the depth of research make it an invaluable resource for the most experienced stone practitioners.

340 - The Environment: A History of the Idea

The Environment: A History of the Idea by Paul Warde (Author), Libby Robin (Author), Sverker Sörlin (Author)

Is it possible for the economy to grow without the environment being destroyed? Will our lifestyles impoverish the planet of our children and grandchildren? Is the world sick? Can it be healed?

Less than a lifetime ago, these questions would have made no sense. This was not because our ancestors had no impact on nature-nor because they were unaware of the serious damage they had done. What people lacked was an idea: a way of imagining the web of interconnection and consequence of which the natural world is made. Without this notion, we didn't have a way to describe the scale and scope of human impact upon nature. This idea was "the environment."

In this fascinating book, Paul Warde, Libby Robin, and Sverker Sörlin trace the emergence of the concept of the environment following World War II, a period characterized by both hope for a new global order and fear of humans' capacity for almost limitless destruction. It was at this moment that a new idea and a new narrative about the planet-wide impact of people's behavior emerged, closely allied to anxieties for the future. Now we had a vocabulary for talking about how we were changing nature: resource exhaustion and energy, biodiversity, pollution, and-eventually-climate change.

With the rise of "the environment," the authors argue, came new expertise, making certain kinds of knowledge crucial to understanding the future of our planet. The untold history of how people came to conceive, to manage, and to dispute environmental crisis, The Environment is essential reading for anyone who wants to help protect the environment from the numerous threats it faces today.

Chasing the Sun: The New Science of Sunlight and How it Shapes Our Bodies and Minds (Wellcome Collection) by Linda Geddes (Author)

Since the dawn of time, humans have worshipped the sun. And with good reason.

Our biology is set up to work in partnership with the sun. From our sleep cycles to our immune systems and our mental health, access to sunlight is crucial for living a happy and fulfilling life. As more of us move into light-polluted cities, spending our days in dim offices and our evenings watching brightly lit screens, we are in danger of losing something vital: our connection to the star that gave us life. It's a loss that could have far-reaching consequences that we're only just beginning to grasp.

398 - Water Conservation, Recycling and Reuse

Water Conservation, Recycling and Reuse: Issues and Challenges by Rajeev Pratap Singh (Editor), Alan S. Kolok (Editor), Shannon L. Bartelt-Hunt (Editor)

Water - a basic element of life, livelihood, food security and sustainable development - holds the key to global sustainability. The global water demand has been increased 3-fold in the past five decades and only 0.4% of the total world's fresh water resources is available and accessible for use.

The United Nations projected that half of all countries will face water scarcity by 2025 and more than one-third of the world's population could be affected by water stress by 2050. The water problem is rapidly intensifying in the Asian region, and around 700 million people do not have access to safe drinking water.

Similarly, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, by 2050, more than one billion people in Asia alone are projected to experience negative impacts on water resources as a result of climate change.

Climate change is also putting extra pressure on and adversely affecting the global water cycle, leading to irregular precipitation, more floods and droughts and creating an imbalance between water supply and demand. The availability of safe water is a major global concern due to the rapidly increasing population, urbanization, unsustainable consumption patterns, and rapid shifts in land use.

It is believed that reduced access to freshwater will have cascading consequences that will pose threat to global food security, livelihood security, and cause large scale migration and economic and geopolitical tensions.

As such, strategies for water conservation, wastewater reuse and recycling should be adopted in order to lessen the gap between supply and demand for water for different activities.

This book provides readers with a better understanding of the water security challenges, and presents innovations to address these challenges, strengthen the science-policy interface, and develop institutional and human capacities for water security and sustainability.
