SC - 1306 | Beginning SQL Queries

Clare Churcher

This book is for anyone who has a well-designed relational database and needs to extract information from it.
You might have noticed in the previous sentence that the database must be “well designed.”
I can’t overemphasize this point. If your database is badly designed, then it will not be able to store accurate and consistent data, and so the information your queries retrieve will always be prone to inaccuracies.

240 - Interaction of Mycophenolic Acid and Pantoprazole

Interaction of Mycophenolic Acid and Pantoprazole: A Pharmacokinetic Crossover Study by Olesja Rissling

Olesja Rissling analyzes the potential interaction of mycophenolic acid (MPA) and pantoprazole. MPA is used as an immunosuppressive drug to prevent acute organ rejections after organ transplantation.

Pantoprazole, known to interact with the bioavailability of drugs, is used to prevent upper gastrointestinal disorders.

The author performed a clinical pharmacokinetic study in renal transplant patients to evaluate a potential interaction of MPA and pantoprazole. The bioavailability and the maximum concentration of MPA were determined with or without pantoprazole intake. An influence on the immunosuppressive effect was evaluated by measuring the target enzyme activity.

Overall, no significant change in the bioavailability or the maximum concentration was found. Similar results were obtained for the target enzyme activity after pantoprazole intake with MPA. The results suggest that the interaction of pantoprazole with MPA does not compromise the immunosuppressive effect to a clinically meaningful extent.

245 - Plague: One Scientist's Intrepid Search for the Truth

Plague: One Scientist's Intrepid Search for the Truth about Human Retroviruses and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Autism, and Other Diseases Reprint Edition by Kent Heckenlively, Judy Mikovits

On July 22, 2009, a special meeting was held with twenty-four leading scientists at the National Institutes of Health to discuss early findings that a newly discovered retrovirus was linked to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), prostate cancer, lymphoma, and eventually neurodevelopmental disorders in children.

When Dr. Judy Mikovits finished her presentation the room was silent for a moment, then one of the scientists said, "Oh my God!” The resulting investigation would be like no other in science. For Dr. Mikovits, a twenty-year veteran of the National Cancer Institute, this was the midpoint of a five-year journey that would start with the founding of the Whittemore-Peterson Institute for Neuro-Immune Disease at the University of Nevada, Reno, and end with her as a witness for the federal government against her former employer, Harvey Whittemore, for illegal campaign contributions to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

On this journey Dr. Mikovits would face the scientific prejudices against CFS, wander into the minefield that is autism, and through it all struggle to maintain her faith in God and the profession to which she had dedicated her life. This is a story for anybody interested in the peril and promise of science at the very highest levels in our country.

248 - Fusion Genes and Cancer

Fusion Genes and Cancer 1st Edition by Ajaikumar B. Kunnumakkara, Ganesan Padmavathi, Nand Kishor Roy

Development of cancer, a dreadful disease of mankind, is a multi-stage process involving numerous molecular alterations at both genomic and proteomic levels. Immense research for the past several decades in the field of cancer identified many such mutations and their role in carcinogenesis.

Concept of 'fusion genes' seeded way back in 20th century has now grown into a new field of cancer research. However, there is a lack of knowledge among scientists about these fusion genes and their importance in cancer, which can be mainly attributed to unavailability of a comprehensive book on this topic.

Therefore, this book is first of its kind and aims at giving a detailed idea on the formation of gene fusions and their importance in the development and progression of cancer; techniques to identify novel gene fusions; and therapeutics available to target various fusion proteins and their impact in cancer therapy by compiling the information from the literature available till date.
