SC - 663 | Insects of Stored Products

Insects of Stored Products by David Rees

Insect infestations in grains and other stored food and fiber products cause annual losses worth many millions of dollars worldwide. This illustrated guide enables specialists and non-specialists to distinguish the major pests of durable stored products found throughout the world.

It describes how to identify each pest group or species and summarizes the latest information on their biology, ecology, geographical distribution, the damage they cause and their economic importance.

Hundreds of color photographs illustrate the identifying features of the most important beetles, moths, psocids, bugs and wasps found in stored products.
Essential details on inspection and trapping are included to aid in the early detection of infestations, allowing more time to plan and undertake effective pest control. An extensive bibliography provides a convenient entry point to the specialized literature on these insects.
This concise yet comprehensive reference is an essential tool for people responsible for the storage and handling of dried durable products of plant and animal origin worldwide.

* Euclidean Geometry and Transformations (Dover Books on Mathematics)

"A good textbook." ― Mathematical Gazette. This introduction to Euclidean geometry emphasizes both the theory and the practical application of isometries and similarities to geometric transformations. Each chapter begins with an optional commentary on the history of geometry. Contents include modern elementary geometry, isometries and similarities in the plane, vectors and complex numbers in geometry, inversion, and isometries in space.

Numerous exercises appear throughout the text, many of which have corresponding answers and hints at the back of the book. Prerequisites for this text, which is suitable for undergraduate courses, include high school algebra, geometry, and elementary trigonometry. 1972 edition.

* Holt Algebra 2 (Holt Mathematics)

I bought this book because I needed to refresh my math skills. Also because it was so inexpensive. This is a very well crafted textbook. Granted I have already taken college level math, however that was a long time ago. With the examples in the book, I made immediate progress with my skills.

It's outdated but that is alright because math has no expiration date. I am going back to college in the fall to earn another degree but I need to brush up on my math skills. With this book I can connect to solving Algebra again! I feel so pleased with the progress I have made in the past month, with the help of this text.

SC - 981 | Analysis: An Introduction

This self-contained text, suitable for advanced undergraduates, provides an extensive introduction to mathematical analysis, from the fundamentals to more advanced material. It begins with the properties of the real numbers and continues with a rigorous treatment of sequences, series, metric spaces, and calculus in one variable.

Further subjects include Lebesgue measure and integration on the line, Fourier analysis, and differential equations. In addition to this core material, the book includes a number of interesting applications of the subject matter to areas both within and outside the field of mathematics. The aim throughout is to strike a balance between being too austere or too sketchy, and being so detailed as to obscure the essential ideas. A large number of examples and 500 exercises allow the reader to test understanding, practise mathematical exposition and provide a window into further topics.

SC - 1006 | Large Deviations and Metastability

Large Deviations and Metastability (Encyclopedia of Mathematics and its Applications Book 100) by Enzo Olivieri (Author), Maria Eulália Vares (Author)

This self-contained account of the main results in large deviation theory includes recent developments and emphasizes the Freidlin-Wentzell results on small random perturbations.

Metastability is described on physical grounds, followed by the development of more exacting approaches to its description. The first part of the book then develops such pertinent tools as the theory of large deviations which is used to provide a physically relevant dynamical description of metastability. Written for graduate students, this book affords an excellent route into contemporary research as well.

SC - 1009 | Synergetics: Introduction and Advanced Topics (Physics and Astronomy Online Library)

This book is an often-requested reprint of two classic texts by H. Haken: "Synergetics. An Introduction" and "Advanced Synergetics". Synergetics, an interdisciplinary research program initiated by H. Haken in 1969, deals with the systematic and methodological approach to the rapidly growing field of complexity. Going well beyond qualitative analogies between complex systems in fields as diverse as physics, chemistry, biology, sociology and economics,

Synergetics uses tools from theoretical physics and mathematics to construct an unifying framework within which quantitative descriptions of complex, self-organizing systems can be made. This may well explain the timelessness of H. Haken's original texts on this topic, which are now recognized as landmarks in the field of complex systems. They provide both the beginning graduate student and the seasoned researcher with solid knowledge of the basic concepts and mathematical tools. Moreover, they admirably convey the spirit of the pioneering work by the founder of Synergetics through the essential applications contained herein that have lost nothing of their paradigmatic character since they were conceived.

SC - 1030 | Elliptic Curves

This book is an introduction to the theory of elliptic curves, ranging from its most elementary aspects to current research. The first part, which grew out of Tate's Haverford lectures, covers the elementary arithmetic theory of elliptic curves over the rationals. The next two chapters recast the arguments used in the proof of the Mordell theorem into the context of Galois cohomology and descent theory.
