* After the Dinosaurs

After the Dinosaurs: The Age of Mammals (Life of the Past) by Donald R. Prothero (Author)

Perhaps nudged over the evolutionary cliff by a giant boloid striking the earth, the incredible and fascinating group of animals called dinosaurs became extinct some 65 million years ago (except for their feathered descendants). In their place evolved an enormous variety of land creatures, especially the mammals, which in their way were every bit as remarkable as their Mesozoic cousins.

The Age of Mammals, the Cenozoic Era, has never had its Jurassic Park, but it was an amazing time in earth's history, populated by a wonderful assortment of bizarre animals. The rapid evolution of thousands of species of mammals brought forth gigantic hornless rhinos, sabertooth cats, mastodonts and mammoths, and many other creatures-including our own ancestors.

Their story is part of a larger story of a world emerging from the greenhouse conditions of the Mesozoic, warming up dramatically about 55 million years ago, and then cooling rapidly so that 33 million years ago the glacial ice returned. The earth's vegetation went through equally dramatic changes, from tropical jungles in Montana and forests at the poles, to grasslands and savannas across the entire world. Life in the sea also underwent striking evolution reflecting global climate change, including the emergence of such creatures as giant sharks, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and whales.

After the Dinosaurs is a book for everyone who has an abiding fascination with the remarkable life of the past.

SC - 786 | Practical Plant Identification

Practical Plant Identification Including a Key to Native and Cultivated Flowering Plants in North Temperate Regions by James Cullen

Practical Plant Identification is an essential guide to identifying flowering plant families (wild or cultivated) in the northern hemisphere. Details of plant structure and terminology accompany practical keys to identify 318 families into which flowering plants are divided. Specifically designed for practical use, the keys can easily be worked backwards for checking identifications.

Containing descriptions of families and listings of the genera within, it also includes a section on further identification to generic and specific levels. A successor to the author's bestselling The Identification of Flowering Plant Families, this guide is updated, and retains the same concise user-friendly approach. Cullen skillfully leads the reader from restrictive disciplines of older taxonomy, into an era of increasing numbers of plant families defined by DNA analysis. Aimed primarily at students of botany and horticulture, this is a perfect introduction to plant identification for anyone interested in plant taxonomy.

SC - 824 | Magnetism in the Solid State

Magnetism in the Solid State: An Introduction (Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences) by Peter Mohn

This book presents a phenomenological approach to the field of solid state magnetism. After introducing the basic concepts from statistical thermodynamics and electronic structure theory, the first part discusses the standard models for localized moments (Weiss, Heisenberg) and delocalized moments (Stoner).

This is followed by a chapter about exchange and correlation in metals, again considering the results for the localized and delocalized limit. The book ends with a chapter about spin fluctuations, which are introduced as an alternative to the finite temperature Stoner theory. A useful reference work for researchers, this book will also be a valuable accompaniment to graduate courses on magnetism and magnetic materials.

SC - 852 | Optics in Magnetic Multilayers and Nanostructures

Optics in Magnetic Multilayers and Nanostructures (Optical Science and Engineering) by Stefan Visnovsky (Author)

In the continuing push toward optical computing, the focus remains on finding and developing the right materials. Characterizing materials, understanding the behavior of light in these materials, and being able to control the light are key players in the search for suitable optical materials. Optics in Magnetic Multilayers and Nanostructures presents an accessible introduction to optics in anisotropic magnetic media.

While most of the literature presents only final results of the complicated formulae for the optics in anisotropic media, this book provides detailed explanations and full step-by-step derivations that offer insight into the procedure and reveal any approximations. Based on more than three decades of experimental research on the subject, the author explains the basic concepts of magnetooptics; nonreciprocal wave propagation; the simultaneous effect of crystalline symmetry and arbitrarily oriented magnetization on the form of permittivity tensors; spectral dependence of permittivity; multilayers at polar, longitudinal, transverse, and arbitrary magnetization; the effect of normal or near-normal incidence on multilayers; and anisotropic multilayer gratings.
Making the subject of magnetooptics and anisotropic media approachable by the nonspecialist, Optics in Magnetic Multilayers and Nanostructures serves as an ideal introduction to newcomers and an indispensable reference for seasoned researchers.

SC - 982 | Extremum Problems for Eigenvalues of Elliptic Operators (Frontiers in Mathematics)

This book focuses on extremal problems. For instance, it seeks a domain which minimizes or maximizes a given eigenvalue of the Laplace operator with various boundary conditions and various geometric constraints. Also considered is the case of functions of eigenvalues. The text probes similar questions for other elliptic operators, such as Schrodinger, and explores optimal composites and optimal insulation problems in terms of eigenvalues.

SC - 1014 | Flat Level Set Regularity of P-laplace Phase Transitions

Flat Level Set Regularity of P-laplace Phase Transitions (Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society) by Enrico Valdinoci (Author), Berardino Sciunzi (Author), and Vasile Ovidiu Savin (Author)

We prove a Harnack inequality for level sets of $p$-Laplace phase transition minimizers. In particular, if a level set is included in a flat cylinder, then, in the interior, it is included in a flatter one. The extension of a result conjectured by De Giorgi and recently proven by the third author for $p=2$ follows.

SC - 1080 | Cycle Representations of Markov Processes

Cycle Representations of Markov Processes (Stochastic Modelling and Applied Probability) by Sophia L. Kalpazidou (Author)

This book is a prototype providing new insight into Markovian dependence via the cycle decompositions. It presents a systematic account of a class of stochastic processes known as cycle (or circuit) processes - so-called because they may be defined by directed cycles.

These processes have special and important properties through the interaction between the geometric properties of the trajectories and the algebraic characterization of the Markov process. An important application of this approach is the insight it provides to electrical networks and the duality principle of networks. In particular, it provides an entirely new approach to infinite electrical networks and their applications in topics as diverse as random walks, the classification of Riemann surfaces, and to operator theory.

The second edition of this book adds new advances to many directions, which reveal wide-ranging interpretations of the cycle representations like homologic decompositions, orthogonality equations, Fourier series, semigroup equations, and disintegration of measures. The versatility of these interpretations is consequently motivated by the existence of algebraic-topological principles in the fundamentals of the cycle representations. This book contains chapter summaries as well as a number of detailed illustrations.

Review of the earlier edition:

"This is a very useful monograph which avoids ready ways and opens new research perspectives. It will certainly stimulate further work, especially on the interplay of algebraic and geometrical aspects of Markovian dependence and its generalizations."

SC - 1081 | Convexity and Well-Posed Problems

Convexity and Well-Posed Problems (CMS Books in Mathematics) by Roberto Lucchetti (Author)

This book deals mainly with the study of convex functions and their behavior from the point of view of stability with respect to perturbations. We shall consider convex functions from the most modern point of view: a function is defned to be convex whenever its epigraph, the set of the points lying above the graph, is a convex set.

Thus many of its properties can be seen also as properties of a certain convex set related to it. Moreover, we shall consider extended real valued functions, i. e. , functions taking possibly the values?? and +?. The reason for considering the value +? is the powerful device of including the constraint set of a constrained minimum problem into the objective function itself (by rede?ning it as +? outside the constraint set). Except for trivial cases, the minimum value must be taken at a point where the function is not +?, hence at a point in the constraint set. And the value ?? is allowed because useful operations, such as the inf-convolution, can give rise to functions valued?? even when the primitive objects are real valued. Observe that de?ning the objective function to be +? outside the closed constraint set preserves lower semicontinuity, which is the pivotal and mi- mal continuity assumption one needs when dealing with minimum problems. Variational calculus is usually based on derivatives.

SC - 1204 | An Introduction to Infinite-Dimensional Analysis

An Introduction to Infinite-Dimensional Analysis by Giuseppe Da Prato

Based on well-known lectures given at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, this book introduces analysis in a separable Hilbert space of infinite dimension. It starts from the definition of Gaussian measures in Hilbert spaces, concepts such as the Cameron-Martin formula, Brownian motion and Wiener integral are introduced in a simple way. These concepts are then used to illustrate basic stochastic dynamical systems and Markov semi-groups, paying attention to their long-time behavior.
